Monae Freeman

Education Coordinator at Brooklyn Arts Council
Community Organizer at Pennie's Pantry
Monae Freeman is an arts administrator, cultural producer and activist dedicated to uplifting the voices of historically marginalized artists, encouraging them to realize their full creative potential. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, she received her B.A. in International Economics and Modern Languages with a concentration in Spanish Literature. She holds a certificate in Development Economics and The Economics of Urban Growth & Quality of the Environment. She advocates for equal opportunity by providing artists with fundamental knowledge, strategy and greater access to developmental resources. Monae hopes that her efforts will lead to increased economic mobility amongst those with a background in and passion for the arts.

Prior to joining BAC, Monae held positions in the event/video production industry and taught high school in the nonprofit education sector. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched an initiative, Pennie’s Pantry--a community fridge & pantry that offers free, nutritious food to a community at greatest risk of food insecurity. Pennie’s Pantry is situated near NYCHA’s Marcy, Tompkins and Sumner public housing developments.

Monae is a singer and multi-instrumentalist whose primary instruments of focus are piano and synthesizer. She also co-produces a radio show every other Sunday for a local Bushwick platform, Newtown Radio. She is truly passionate about experimental innovation and admires art influenced by radical progressivism.

Monae currently resides in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn near Pennie’s Pantry, with her cat, Velma.
